Euphrasi
This herb is named for Euphrosyne, goddess of joy. Perhaps because that is the response you have when your runny, irritated eyes clear up after using this herb! The flowers of this plant do resemble little eyes and it is an excellent remedy for many eye problems. Uses include rhinitis due to allergies, respiratory infections or eye infections such as pinkeye. Eyebright’s physiologic effects are mainly anti-inflammatory, antiseptic , gently astringing, decongesting and expectorant. It is used both internally and topically, and it can be made into an eyewash by briefly decocting about ½ teaspoon of the herb in 1 cup of water for 10 minutes. Strain the decoction into an airtight, sterilized container then refrigerate and use within 2 days.
Eyebright is highly effective in relieving the miserable symptoms associated with conjunctivitis regardless of the causes. In one study using eyedrops made with the herb “good to very good” improvement in symptoms was achieved in more than 85% of patients within 3 days. The symptoms evaluated included redness, burning, foreign body sensation and veiled vision.
