Pimenta

Allspice is Spanish for pepper by explorers in the 16th century due to the dark brown, wrinkled skin.  The effectiveness has not been fully studied.  Other than cooking, usages can be for antiseptic, pain relieving properties, bloating and digestion. It can also be used to fight bacteria, viruses, and fungi.  Safety concerns are skin irritation, nausea, vomiting, convulsions, and slowing of the central nervous system.

Allspice is an aromatic evergreen tree with leathery oblong leaves, clusters of small white flowers, and tiny green berries that turn brown when ripe. The berries are harvested before they are fully ripe to preserve volatile oils. It is native to the Caribbean and Central and South America. Allspice is a digestive stimulant, used for flatulence, indigestion, and diarrhea. It is often combined with tonic or laxative herbs as it is antiseptic, analgesic, and stomach-settling. Research shows that Allspice has an estrogenic effect (it is used in Costa Rica as a menopause remedy) and lowers high blood pressure. Do not take the essential oil internally without professional guidance. Do not take as a medicine during pregnancy.
