Alkanna tinctoria 

Alkanet Root dates back to 300 BC.  This Greek plant dye is from the Borage Family. It is known to grow up to 12 inches in height with rough leaves, small blue flowers, and a thick root.  Also found in commerce 7 to 10 cm in length, 5 to 15 mm in thickness and somewhat twisted in appearance.  Blooming in early summer, this dark-red, easily separable bark has a whitish fibrous center and spongy texture.  The cortical part of the plant is insoluble in water, but soluble in oils, alcohol, chlolorform and ether. The red color has two distinct bodies defining either a blue dye when in a natural weak acid state or produces a green dye if an acid. This natural pigment can produce burgundies and purples depending on the alcohol extraction and dilution.  These colors are historically used for tinting/coloring wool, silk or fine woods.  Alkanet root matter is considered to be non-toxic.
