Our results demonstrate for the first time that the peripheral and central analgesic effects of govaniadine could be in part related to the involvement of COX-2 activity and by its interaction with the opioid system.

The primary medicinal action of Corydalis is pain relief.

Corydalis contains alkaloids including corydalis L, corydaline, tetrahydropalmatine (THP), and protopine; and the protoberberine-type alkaloid, leonticine. The powdered rhizome has up to 1/10th of the analgesic potency of morphine. THP has been shown to block dopamine receptors in the CNS, lending analgesic and sedative properties. THP also stimulates adrenocorticotrophic hormone, which controls aspects of stress. It has been shown to relieve menstrual pain in multiple trials in China. It is used for most cases of pain, especially period pain and abdominal pain. It is said to invigorate the blood and is helpful in pain from traumatic injury.
