Sage has a broad spectrum of uses, and notably contains strong antiseptic properties. Sage can be used to relieve a sore throat and fight oral infections. It is effective against Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus bacterium and exhibits anti-viral effects. Sage also has a hormonal effect €“ it is estrogenic, and can be useful for regulating the menstrual cycle. It is drying, and is good for oily skin conditions, reducing perspiration and night sweats and can also be used in weaning to decrease lactation. Due to high ketone content, Sage is not suitable for use with children.

Our very fresh Sage essential oil from Spain has an extremely diffusive and penetrating aroma that is unmistakably warming and clearing. However, essential oil of Salvia officinalis has a high thujone content (up to 50%), and because of this, it is necessary to use this oil only with appropriate caution (some recommend only with the advice of a certified aromatherapist or not at all1); thujone can be highly neuro- and hepato-toxic when incorrectly used.2 In addition, thujone mimics estrogen3 and for this reason it is not recommended for use during pregnancy and breast feeding4

As a dried herb, white sage (Salvia apiana) has been traditionally used in Native American culture for ceremonial cleansing5; in a similar fashion, essential oil of Salvia officinalis can be diffused to cleanse room environments, or a drop can be rubbed on the hands to disinfect and clear energy between clients.6

Aromatic Profile: Very strong, highly penetrating, diffusive, fresh, warm camphoraceous/herbaceous aroma.

Appearance: Water-white, clear, transparent, mobile liquid.

Use: Aromatherapy, Natural Perfumery.

Blending Suggestions: Dilute and add drop by drop to your blends until the desired effect is achieved.

Blends Well With: Basil, Bergamot and other citrus oils, Geranium, Ginger, Hyssop, Laurel Leaf, Lavandin, Lavender, Lemon, Melissa, Oregano, Rosemary, Thyme. “Introduces fresh notes in fougères, chypres, aldehydic perfume bases, colognes, and spicy men’s fragrances…” It can be used in small amounts to lift and fix top notes; it also has relatively good tenacity.7

Safety Considerations: Avoid use during pregnancy and breast feeding.8 Tisserand also reports that Sage should not be taken orally due to neurotoxic hazards (epileptic-type convulsions).9 We also recommend avoiding use with children less than 10 years of age, elders, epileptics, and those who have high blood pressure. Dilute before using. A patch test should be performed before use for those with sensitive skin
