Spikenard shares some qualities that are found in Valerian, making it a useful sedative, especially when rubbed over the solar plexus or heart area. Spikenard is also particularly beneficial to dry or mature skin, and is a superior essential oil remedy for dandruff. It offers relief for rashes and psoriasis and inflammation. It also has been used for nervous indigestion, insomnia, heart palpitations, and emotional tension.
Spikenard is very calming and balancing to the nervous system, and has a Valerian-like aroma, yet is sweeter and less pungent. It can be used in natural perfumery to lend an exotic note, therapeutically to help calm anxiety and induce relaxation, and for ritual purposes in an anointing oil.
